Get Crafty

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Are you good with a glue gun? Handy at the holidays? Well, I’m typically not, although occasionally something spurs me into a creative mode – next thing you know, I’ve got a Christmas tree filled with acorns painted to look like little Santas.michaelselves

If you’ve got a holiday project you’re fond of, you might want to check out the “Handmade Holiday Contest” at that Mecca of all things handmade: Michaels. Through Dec. 20, the arts and crafts store is awarding two $100 gift cards each week to the top vote-getters: Just upload a picture of your creation, and visitors will rate their top picks.

The store is also selecting grand-prize winners for “Best Creative Project” and “Best Creative Project Under $20″ that will each earn a $250 gift card and a trip for two to New York City to see the queen of craftiness herself taping The Martha Stewart Show.

If you have no paper-and-glue skills whatsoever, you can attend the weekly (and free) in-store holiday workshops that cover everything from kid stuff to how to make your own awesome gift wrap (which might even turn out better than the gift itself). Or if you can build your skills at home by checking out the how-to webisodes.

Then you have no excuse not to drag out your box of sequins and pine cones and get crafting!

Win a Day At Disneyland!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Do you read mom blogs and think, “Gosh, those mom bloggers get to do fun stuff!”?

Believe it or not, blogging is hard work. You’ve got to keep your schedules straight, write like crazy, keep your posts updated, Tweet and Twitter like a flock earsof sparrows and spend endless hours editing videos and photos. But it’s not all work and no play – the best part is getting out there and learning about what’s cool and fun for families in Los Angeles.

After all that, you might think you really don’t “have time for this.” And that’s probably true. But do you have time to enter to win a fabulous day enjoying the Holiday Celebration at the Disneyland Resort on Nov. 21? That’s what I thought!

I’m inviting one I Don’t Have Time For This reader to walk a day in my mom blogger boots!jasminejack

That’s right! One very lucky winner and three guests of his or her choice will get to enjoy a little mom-blog VIP treatment while checking out the holiday decor in the park and experiencing some special activities with me and several other mom bloggers (and the winners of their Disneyland blog giveaways). Parking will be included, as will a buffet dinner and some socializing. It’ll be fun. And I promise I won’t make you work too hard.

All you have to do is get yourself there; Disneyland and the mom bloggers will take care of the rest!

Here’s how to enter:

  • Email me at carolyn.graham@parenthood.com and put “Holiday Celebration at Disneyland” in the subject line. Be sure and include your name, address and daytime phone number (if I can’t reach you by noon on Thursday, Oct. 29, I’ll have to pick another winner).
  • Deadline to enter is Oct. 29.
  • I’ll be picking a winner at random, but just for kicks give me a couple of your family’s top tips for visiting the park.
  • You and your three guests must be traveling from L.A. County.
  • You and your three guests must be able to attend the festivities with me on Nov. 21.

Mitchel Musso Concert Ticket Giveaway!

Concert Ticket Giveaway: Mitchel Musso @ House of Blues!

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

mussoIf you haven’t heard of this adorable mop-topped kid, just ask your tween daughter. Mitchel Musso plays Hannah Montana’s best friend Oliver Oken. Like so many of his Disney Channel colleagues, this kid can sing, too, and is kicking off his solo self-titled album (which debuted this summer) with his very first U.S. tour.

Courtesy of Live Nation, I’m giving away a pair to tickets to see Mitchel’s (all-ages) show at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, at the House of Blues Sunset Strip (insert sound of screaming tween here!).

If you don’t know his music, check it out here or flip over to Radio Disney (AM 1110; Kate has nearly worn down the memory button on my car stereo). The album also hit #2 on the iTunes Pop chart (second only to Lady Gaga) and #5 on iTunes Album chart on the very first day of release. The album debuted at #11 on Billboard’s Digital album chart with more than 50,000 digital downloads. And I’m going to admit to taking a slight guilty pleasure from listening to his big single, “Hey.”

Just send me an email with the subject line “Mitchel Musso tickets,” and I’ll randomly pick a winner on Aug. 24 (and let the winner know via email or phone ASAP!).

To Enter:

  • Email me at carolyn.graham@parenthood.com
  • “Mitchel Musso tickets”
  • Include your name, address and daytime phone number (if I can’t reach you by noon on Wednesday, Aug. 25, I’ll have to pick another winner).

Lettuce Quote You

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

kidsquotecontest-prizes3Do your children have a heartfelt/funny/poignant/pithy way of saying “thank you” to the world for protecting our environment for their future? If so, type it up and send it to Earthbound Farm, which just launched a contest on its site seeking the best kid quotes.

If picked, the kid quote will appear on the inside of Earthbound Farm’s clamshell salad label. Each child also will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond for future education, and a $500 donation will be made in your child’s name to his or her choice from a select group of environmental nonprofits, including Healthy Child Healthy World and the Organic Farming Research Foundation. Four winners will be selected in July and then a new winner will be picked each month through 2009.

And just so you can feel good about those 50 salads you’ll be buying if your child’s quote is selected, Earthbound switched to a post-consumer recycled plastic for its containers.

However, I’d be thankful if I could get my kids – OK, me – to eat more salad …

Dan Zanes Deadline Today!

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Have you entered to win tickets to see the cool kid-rock dude Dan Zanes perform at UCLA this month? Enter now, and your kids will love you. And you’ll enjoy the music just as much, I promise!

This contest is for blog readers only, but it ends today. Click here to read the original post and find out how to enter!

Blog Contest: Dan Zanes!

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

My 4-year-old son refers to him as “that guy with the hair,” but we know him as “that guy with the great riffs and tunes.” His real name is Dan Zanes, and you can win tickets for your family to see him and his friends perform when he checks into Royce Hall at UCLA on March 14-15.

“Hello Hello” is one of my faves:

One grand-prize winner will win four tickets (valued at $74) to one of the three performances, and 10 other lucky winners will win one of 10 Dan Zanes and Friends Nueva York albums (valued at $15).

If you don’t have him on your iPod yet, this is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with this laid-back but talented East Coast musician. His music exudes a warmth and maturity you don’t always find in albums marketed to the younger set – think of him as sort of a playful Bob Dylan with a zany mop of hair.

Click here by March 2 to enter to win!
