The World Health Organization today raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the global spread if the H1N1 influenza virus, but isn’t because H1N1 is especially dangerous. Yes, there have been reported deaths, but far fewer during this outbreak than during a traditional seasonal flu. Instead, the alert level is due to how much the virus has spread. Phase 6 in the WHO system is reached when there are ongoing community-level outbreaks of a virus in multiple parts of the world. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than 70 countries are reporting cases of H1N1. There hare been 13,217 cases reported in the U.S., and 27 deaths. By contrast, the CDC estimates that around 36,000 people die from complications of traditional flu in an average season.
