About

Like many employed parents, I sandwich my life between my work and my children (ages 3 and 1-1/2). It’s a tasty sandwich, but it drips on my tie. I’ve changed a lot of diapers during phone meetings. You gain can a lot of perspective when you do that…  but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

You can read more about my career (and me) at http://taxonomist.tripod.com and http://www.potomacindexing.com, but in a nutshell, I’m an information organizer. I am a consultant on several kinds of things: taxonomies and subject hierarchies, web navigation and search results, information architecture, and indexing. If all of those things sound completely alien to you, you’re in good company. The most concrete example is the back-of-the-book index, that alphabetized thing you use to find stuff in a textbook. I’ve been writing those for many years, and I’ve been teaching others to write them since 1997.
